Exhibitions are ever changing at the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery in Red Lodge.

August 2-29, 2021 view two spectacular exhibitions by notable women. In the main gallery see Women of the West: Art by Maggy Rozycki Hiltner, Gesine Janzen, Echo Ukrainetz, and Arin Waddell. In the north gallery view Spiritual Expressions of the Untamed West by Shirle Wempner.

Through painting, mixed media sculpture, woodcuts, handmade books, and handstitched collage work each woman shares their view of the west.

Gesine Janzen is Associate Professor of Art and Head of Printmaking at Montana State University in Bozeman who is inspired by the waterways of the western states.

She says her work “is intended to provoke thought on the many contradictions evident when observing water’s beauty, enjoying nature tourism, and how water is conserved and managed.”

Red Lodge, Montana artist Maggy Rozycki Hiltner says, “I’ve tasked myself with questioning the artifacts of my culture by changing their context and content. Working with handmade remnants of the past, I repurpose them to comment on the present.”

Great Falls artist Echo Ukrainetz is a native Montanan with a passion for history. She creates art using the process of batik.

The fourth women in the Women of the West exhibition is Sheridan, Wyoming artist Arin Waddell. Arin often creates work with a bit of whimsy that contains a stronger message.

In addition to the Women of the West, featured in the main gallery of the Arts Guild we will present work in the north gallery by Big Timber artist Shirle Wempner. Spiritual Expressions of the Untamed West presents Wempner’s impressionistic style as she depicts contemporary and historical themes of the west.

See the art and meet the artists during a closing reception to be held from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, August 29, 2021. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
